The RMWI is a community of artists,
writers and scholars based on the concepts behind Virginia Wolf’s
essay, “A Room of One’s Own.” Talent and creativity
can flourish best when supported and encouraged with adequate
resources. Each year, seven to ten Associates are selected in
open competition. Winners receive stipends and support services
to help them complete a yearlong creative project in the arts
or letters. Associates’ works are exhibited at annual Showcase
events: performances, readings, visual arts that are open to the
public, at no charge.
My project as a 2007-2008 Associate is explore
the function of line in art through a series of high detail drawings
with red string taking the traditional symbolic role of lines.
Each drawing will be a meditation on a different function of line:
as halos, as tattoos, as puppet strings, as writing, as the plumb
line of revelation by God, etc. This is based on the fact that
line is a human construction; it exists in nature only as an optic
illusion. Therefore its presence in art is our human way of converting
what we see into codes on the paper, like writing, it shows that
we are instruments of translation and everything we create is
subjective. In some of the drawings apples appear instead of lines,
drawing (no pun intedended) attention to it as a symbol of Adam
and Eve's fall from the Garden of Eden and as wisdom. This compares
the function of line and writting with the traditional role of
wisdom as dangerous, enlightening and irresversible!
Please enjoy this page as I update new drawings for the project
in anticipation of the spring 2008 showcase in Denver, CO. A link
