Half of these drawings are based on the concept of the Mayan Mask of Death and Rebirth. The original mask has three faces: man, muscle and bone. What appealed to me was the way the faces opened sideways, not like traditional multi-headed deity figures (i.e the omni faced Buddha, or the many-headed figures of European folklore) but the infinite possibilities of the sliding mask that opens like a Russian doll and layers ever deeper, with our bones or true selves on the outside and possible selves as deep secrets beneath our latched faces.
